St. Mary's Trident
Memorial Window

In June 2004 we completed The Trident Memorial Window for St Mary’s Church in Staines. It was commissioned to commemorate the Trident air disaster which happened near Staines Moor in 1972. This was one of our most special commissions and we were very honoured to be asked to do the window. A commemorative garden was also created near the crash site.

After months of research and consultation with the congregation of St Mary’s we came up with a design. We considered various ideas including using the coat of arms of the services involved and the flags of the countries involved but it was decided that a simple design would be the most effective and appropriate.
In the design we tried to create a sense of peace, with the dove representing the Holy Spirit. The stars around the border are symbolic of the souls of the victims of the crash and how they are now at peace. The silhouette of the trees against the sky was inspired by photos of the crash site and shows that out of great trauma can come growth and renewal. The Holy Spirit is casting a ray of hope over the field.
